If you have trouble handling that big serve, experiment a little. Since it's tough to hit it by them, try to dump one at the net rusher' s feet. Relax your muscles when returning the ball, and sink it just over the net - right at his toes.
After the service and the return, the objective is to improve your court position so you can get closer to the net. It's here where you can best use the angle to win the point.
In the process of working your way up to the net (shot by shot) don't make the mistake of losing your patience. You'll find too often that the alley will tease you it just sits there, unprotected, waiting for you to try some silly non-percentage shot. Forget it! Stick to the middle of the court. Wait until you get closer to the net then you can angle one into the alley.
Lastly, since it's tough to hit through them, try hitting over them. Lob. Choose the weakest player and make him feel like you' re picking on him. If you succeed, follow your lob into the net - together. Now you're back in the right position where you have a chance to be a hero. Just wait.
In the game of doubles it is unlikely you'll win many points with just one or two shots. Because the doubles court is only nine feet wider than the singles court and there are twice as many players protecting it,the strategic plan is one of patience, placement and position. Your selection of shots should be determined with the goal of improving your court position.
First of all, be realistic when serving. If your first is not too reliable, slow down and try to place it. A medium-paced serve to the backhand will usually do the job. A deep spin serve to the backhand will make your partner look like Tim Henman at the net.
When returning serve in doubles, your goal is to keep your partner safe and out of harm's way. If you can't keep the ball low and crosscourt, your choice is either to give your partner a chest protector and a face mask, or move him back to the baseline with you.
